THE STUDENT CORPS PROGRAM
Student Corps is a program, offered by the Career Center, designed
to promote jobs for students by simplifying employment procedures
for UCSC unit/department employers needing temporary help. Members
of the Student Corps pool are selected on the basis of their skills
and availability for short term and/or intermittent jobs. The types
of jobs available through Student Corps vary considerably (e.g., clerical
office work, filing, photocopying, running errands, reception, sorting
mail, preparing & sending bulk mail, processing, sorting, collating,
labeling, packet assembly, stuffing envelopes, shredding, archiving,
tape recording, posting flyers, banner & poster creating, answering
phones, typing, data entry, transcription, translation, custodial
& maintenance, testing equipment, driving, moving, yard work,
weeding, directing traffic, event set-up & break down, clean up,
ushering, and more). As a Student Corps member, you will have the
opportunity to work for many different departments on and off campus
in a variety of jobs. Student Corps consists of approximately 25 student
members who are responsible for setting up their own temporary assignments
(via the Student Corps job listings posted on the web site) each day.
Student Corps workers are independently responsible for setting up
their own jobs by contacting the department supervisor listed on the
Student Corps job listing web site. HOURS YOU CAN WORK/YOUR
CLASSIFICATION
As a student employee, you are allowed to work a MAXIMUM OF 19
HOURS PER WEEK while school is in session. However, the maximum number
of hours a Student Corps employee may work is 76 hours per calendar
month (this includes quarter breaks and summer months). Because Student
Corps is a temporary job service, THERE IS NO GUARANTEE as to the
number of hours (based on job availability) you will actually work
each month. There tend to be peak periods in which you will be able
to work fairly consistently, and other times when there are very few
jobs available. Student Corps members are classified at the Assistant
II level with a pay rate of $7.12 an hour. EMPLOYMENT
LIMITATIONS
While you are participating in Student Corps program, at the Career
Center, YOU MAY NOT HOLD ANOTHER JOB AT UCSC (paid by another UCSC
unit/department). We want you to be available for Student Corps temporary
jobs, from the Career Center, as they are faxed in and displayed on
the Career Center's Student Corps web site; therefore, we ask that
you make this a commitment. Your Student Corps employment totals for
one month should not exceed 76 hours for the temporary work you do
anywhere throughout the UCSC system, both on and off campus in any
unit/department. If the duration of the job assignment is estimated
to be longer, the employing department is required to go through the
open recruitment process (via posting their job on the ER System).
CHECKING IN FOR JOBS/ACCEPTING JOBS/CONTACTING THE CAREER
CENTER
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO LOG INTO THE STUDENT CORPS JOB LISTING WEB
SITE (www2.ucsc.edu/careers/jobs/studentcorpswkr.html) AT LEAST
ONCE A WEEK. We will be monitoring your logging into the web database
activity each week (the job listing web site database will record
each day & time you log in). Those student employees who miss
three weeks of logging into the Student Corps Job Listing web site,
without first making arrangements with the Student Corps program assistant
(459-4019, studentcorps@ucsc.edu), will be dismissed from Corps.
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ACCEPT ONE JOB PER MONTH (AT A MINIMUM). Visiting
the web site (listed above), with password access, to find these jobs
is the quickest way for you to set up your temporary job assignment(s).
On the web site (listed above) there will be a listing with all the
current job openings. The best time to check the job listings would
be between 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday (while staff is available to data
enter & post all SC jobs). If you know that you will be available
to work early in the morning, you may want to visit the web site during
the prior afternoon, to see if there are any jobs available for the
next day. CONTACT THE JOB SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU'RE INTERESTED
IN THE JOB. You are competing with 24 other students for each job
on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Once you contact and agree to work with a job supervisor (listed in
the job listing), YOU ARE REQUIRED TO IMMEDIATELY CLICK THE "NOTIFY
US" BUTTON (ON THE JOB LISTING WEB SITE) OF YOUR JOB ACCEPTANCE. Notifying
the assistants will allow us to remove the listing from the web so
that the employer is not continually contacted about the job that
is already filled. In addition to posting the jobs on the web, the
Student Corps Program Assistants & Manager will be emailing important
announcements. Responding to email & voice mail messages is also
mandatory. REPORTING OF HOURS AND YOUR PAYCHECK
After finishing a work assignment, your WEEKLY TIME SHEET MUST
BE COMPLETED AND SIGNED BY YOUR JOB SUPERVISOR (only full-time University
employees are eligible to sign as supervisors). ONLY USE ONE WEEKLY
TIME SHEET PER JOB & PER WEEK.
In addition to your weekly timesheet(s), YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING
ALL WEEKLY TIME SHEETS & COMPLETE A MONTHLY TIME SHEET WITH YOUR
SIGNATURE AT THE CAREER CENTER (WITH ALL WEEKLY TIME SHEETS ATTACHED)
TO THE STUDENT CORPS ASSISTANT, BY 10AM ON THE 23RD OF EACH MONTH
(or the last working day prior to the 23rd) IN ORDER TO
BE PAID ON TIME (the Career Center hours are 9:30am-4:00pm, M-F)!
You may be notified during certain months that the turn-in date is
earlier in order to meet Payroll Office deadlines. Only time sheets
received in the Career Center by 10AM on the deadline date
will be reflected in your monthly paycheck. Pay day is on the 8th
working day of each month. You can be pick up your paycheck at the
Career Center or your college office (depending on what you tell the
Student Employment Payroll Assistant when you sign up and are placed
on UCSC payroll). Regulations governing Student Corps do not provide
for sick pay, holiday, or vacation pay. Withholding taxes are the
only payroll deduction. For further information regarding payroll
policies please talk to the Student Corps Program Manager, Cyndi Edinger
(459-2789) or the Accounting Office (459-2488). STUDENT
CORPS MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
It is your responsibility to advise the Career Center of any changes
in address, phone number, email, availability or employment in another
departments on campus. Attitude is of the utmost importance. You are
expected to give punctual, efficient, and cooperative performance
to the hiring department. If you are 15 minutes late for a Student
Corps position it is considered a no show. Two "no shows" and you
will be dismissed from the Student Corps program. If illness or any
unforeseen circumstances prevent attendance at work, it is your responsibility
to immediately notify the supervisor and the Student Corps Assistants
(459-4019, studentcorps@ucsc.edu) in order to find a replacement for
your job assignment. INCENTIVE AWARD PROGRAM
Two students will be awarded a Student Employee Recogition Award
(before taxes) of $300 (1st place) and $200 (2nd place) and mention
at the SERAP ceremony in May. These awards will be granted to the
Student Corps Workers that acheive the total highest number of
different jobs worked (with different supervisors) in Student
Corps during the current academic year. The winners will be determined
on March 24th based on all work performed from the start of Fall quarter
through March 24th of each year. Please note: Only Student Corps student
workers in good academic standing are eligible to be nominated for
these awards. There will also be a year-end Student Corps celebration
to honor all Student Corps workers that have participated in the program
throughout the year.
