Get started with Handshake
Create a Handshake account
- Go to Handshake employer registration. Sign up with your organizational email address and password.
- Handshake will ask you to input some information, including your first and last name, your current job title, and your alma mater.
- Once you’ve input the required information and accepted Handshake’s Terms and Conditions, Handshake will send you a verification email. When it arrives, click “Confirm Email” to verify your account.
Join or Create a Company
- If your company already exists in Handshake’s system, you will be able to select your company’s profile once you confirm your email.
- If your company hasn’t already been added to Handshake, you’ll need to click “Create a New Company”.
- To create a new company profile, follow the prompts and input information about your company, including its name, industry, location, web address, company size, and a description.
- You will then have the option to add a company logo and a branding image.
Connect with UCSC
- Once you’ve created a company profile or joined an existing profile, Handshake will prompt you to search schools to connect with.
- Search “University of California, Santa Cruz” and add us to your list.
- You will either see that your request to join your company profile is pending, or you will be taken to a page for setting up Applicant Status Messaging, so that you can see when the schools you’ve connected to approve your request.
- Our team will approve your request to connect with us after we’ve made sure that we have all of the information we require, and checked that your organization follows our recruitment guidelines.

Post your position
- Click “Post a job” from your home dashboard or find “Jobs” in the top navigation menu and click “Create job” in the top right corner.
- You will now be prompted to fill out information in 4 tabs.
- Job Basics: Job title, job type, contact method, application method, etc.
- Details: Here, you will add a job description, location, required documents, etc.
- Job Preferences: You have the option to set preferences for what types of students you want to be able to apply for your job. You can filter applicants by year, major category, minimum GPA, and more.
- Schools: Select which schools you’d like to post this opportunity to. In this tab you can also set dates for when students will be able to apply to the job.
- Once you have posted the job, our team will approve it and notify you. This may take a few business days as we approve jobs and employers manually.

Post your event in Handshake
If you have an off-campus or virtual recruiting event that you would like students to be aware of, you can post that event at the schools that have approved your company. This is free as long as you don’t need any support from UCSC Career Success. If you need Career Success to support your event, there is a fee involved. Contact slugtalent@ucsc.edu to inquire about event support.
Other ways to market your positions to students
- Post a flyer on campus. The campus bus/shuttle stops are open to posting from off-campus individuals and organizations. Flyers will stay up for about a week.
- Browse UCSC’s student organizations and reach out to a relevant organization.
Not affiliated with a company?
If you are an individual looking to hire a student for caregiving, tutoring, domestic work, etc., it may be difficult for you to post your job on Handshake, as we require recruiters on Handshake to sign up with a business email and have a link to their organization’s website.
Instead, you can take advantage of these resources, which are unaffiliated with UCSC:
- Care.com
- Indeed.com
- Santacruzjobs.com
- Think Local First Santa Cruz
- Santa Cruz Works
- Post on Santa Cruz Nextdoor or Craigslist for short-term caregiving, yardwork, or housework jobs
